Individual states in the us have implemented laws to legalize online gambling, such as poker, casino games and daily fantasy sports. This has become possible following a legal opinion issued by the Department of Justice in 2011 which revised how federal law applied to individual states. Although most states have legalized at least some form of online gambling within their borders, others remain wary – many waiting to see how other states fare before taking any further steps on their own.
Delaware launched their iGaming market in 2013 under the oversight of the Delaware Lottery, offering residents several betting options at what has proven not to be one of the larger markets.
Pennsylvania legalized online gambling since 2017, permitting its residents to enjoy sports betting, horse racing and casino gaming using various gambling websites and apps overseen by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Residents may use multiple regulated sportsbook markets within Pennsylvania.
New jersey has long been considered an innovative leader in online gambling since introducing its market in 2013. Regulated by its Gaming Commission and offering more than 20 licensed casinos for residents to wager at, New jersey also legalized sports betting online as well as revoking old casino regulations for online gaming.
Oregon allows some forms of online gambling, with sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS) both regulated and available; however, poker and casino games such as those found online poker sites like Pokerstars are prohibited due to Oregon being home to numerous tribal casinos that provide casino-style gaming experiences. Recent attempts by legislators to change this situation have not succeeded and they continue to focus on other sectors of their economy instead.
Kansas, like Missouri, strictly forbids online casino play. Although Kansas does have physical casinos and lawmakers have attempted several times in recent years to modify its gambling laws, preventing online casino play from taking place there.
Nevada boasts a robust legal online gambling environment, with players being able to place real-money bets at licensed casinos and sites. Unfortunately, however, Nevada requires that all betting must be placed personally; making remote participation more difficult.
Washington does not permit any form of online casino or poker play; however, residents can visit some physical casinos within its borders. Unfortunately, attempts at changing this have failed in the past; it appears unlikely any changes will take place anytime soon.
